Protect Wyre Group is an umbrella organisation which was formed in 2003 to co-ordinate the efforts of residents on both sides of the River Wyre in their opposition to the Canatxx underground gas storage proposals for the Preesall and Stalmine salt field
It was clear from the outset that the Canatxx planning application was going to be perhaps one of the largest ever presented in the area and that pooled resources was the only way to go - this would also prevent duplication of effort in many areas and open up areas of expertise that could be shared for the common good
PWG is co-ordinated and run by a small committee, namely Chair, Vice-chair, Secretary & Treasurer and they are in turn supported by two representatives from each of the member groups
Amongst these groups there are some key people who have specific industry knowledge and/or specific skills which enables us to present formidable opposition to the proposed scheme from an informed and technically correct viewpoint
It is worth stating at the outset that neither PWG nor any of its member groups has any opposition to the principle of underground gas storage in salt. To the contrary we have been supportive of such schemes in other areas and specifically of the Gateway and other schemes in Morecambe Bay which make the Canatxx proposals even more unnecessary and redundant
What we do oppose is the proposed storage of gas at very high pressures (1,100psi) in one of the shallowest deposits of layered salt in Europe which is bounded by two well known major faults and littered with numerous other smaller faults, fissures, and other adverse geological features, all of which offer a potential migration path for escaping gas towards the tens of thousands of people who live locally.
